The Youngblood Brass Band is a brass band from Oregon, Wisconsin, United States that was started by students at Oregon High School in 1995 when they were known as the One Lard Biskit Brass Band with the name changed to the current name in 1998.

History

The band's founding members, sousaphonist Nat McIntosh and snare drummer/lyricist D.H. Skogen, both went to Oregon and first played together in 1994. The band came together in 1995 as the One Lard Biskit Brass Band, subsequently releasing the album ''Better Recognize'' locally. The Youngblood name dates from 1998, the year the group put out their first album, ''Word On The Street''. In 2000 Youngblood released ''Unlearn'', which featured appearances by Talib Kweli, Mike Ladd, DJ Skooly and Ike Willis. ''Unlearn'', which like ''Word On The Street'' was released independently, garnered the band significant attention and led to them being signed to Ozone Music NYC. The band's first album for Ozone, called ''center:level:roar'', came out in 2003. They tour consistently in the United States and Europe, and in 2005 released a live album entitled ''live. places.'' on their Layered Music record label. Their newest album, ''Is That a Riot?'' (2006) was supported by multiple international tours and festival appearances. The band is also known for frequent educational visits to a range of public and private institutions.

Musical style

The Youngblood Brass Band combines the inspiration they took from the traditional New Orleans brass band sound with influences from jazz music, improvised music, a decidedly punk ethos, and a strong hip hop component. More than many New Orleans groups, the Youngblood band focuses on tight ensemble playing and pushing the boundaries of brass band music beyond its traditional genre, which allows them, even when performing live, to provide solid, diverse backing for Skogen's rapping and McIntosh's virtousic sousaphone work. Unable to be classified as either jazz, hip-hop, punk or any other existing genre, the band coined the term ''Riot Jazz''. The band acknowledge the debt their music owes to the New Orleans bands, however, with performances of traditional tunes such as "Chinatown, My Chinatown", which they included on their ''Unlearn'' album.

In 2004, sousaphonist and primary arranger Nat McIntosh left the group. As Nat's music was a "main component of the band's sound since inception", his departure marked a change in sound for Youngblood Brass Band, as chronicled by the release of ''Live. Places''.

Educational work

Band members credit "really good public school system arts-education programs" for inspiring their love of music, and they make an effort to play for schools as well as at clubs and larger venues. Under the aegis of the Layered Arts Collective, which band members co-founded, they also present musical lectures where in addition to performing they speak about the history of brass bands and hip-hop. Layered also promotes free workshops for local Wisconsin youth, brings in national touring musicians and functions as label/publishing house for their family of artists (including Cougar, another genre-bending group of experimental rockers that also count D.H. Skogen as a member).

Nuclear Rabbit is a California band, started in Novato. The band's music has been called metal, more specifically "avant-garde" metal, but incorporates a variety of other styles, making classification difficult. Known for its unusual sound and lyrics, as well as bassist Jean Baudin's 11-string bass. Nuclear Rabbit has a large fan base despite being a perpetually underground and independent band. They are arguably one of the most well known underground bands in California, having more mainstream bands like Papa Roach, Alien Ant Farm, and Deftones opening for them.

Biography

Nuclear Rabbit was started in 1989 by bassist Jean Baudin, who was influenced by a variety of music styles, including Fishbone and Bad Brains, and envisioned having a band not bound to any genre. He was soon joined by guitarist Pat Garner and drummer Steve "Stymie" Sigaty. Originally Baudin performed the vocals, but Greg Parrish was eventually asked to step in as vocalist. Nuclear Rabbit incorporates a variety of genres in their music, including metal, funk, ska, hardcore, punk, jazz, East Indian, and Egyptian. Baudin uses a variety of bass techniques, including tapping, slapping and popping. Their music is often characterized by sudden tempo changes and wacky musical stylings.

The band recorded several demos, some of which are included on the compilation ''Vicuna''. After a quick switch of guitarists, Nuclear Rabbit recorded their first full-length album, ''Intestinal Fortitude'', in 1998. Soon after, Greg left the band and was replaced by Jon Scullion, with whom they recorded their ''More Human'' EP.

In 2000, following ''More Human'', Nuclear Rabbit went on hiatus. During this time Jean and Steve formed an alternative rock style group called Element of Surprise, often stylized as "E:OS." The band was formed as a supergroup of underground artists, eventually including vocalist Andy Slipka of Tribal Disco Noise and guitarist Raye Medeiros of Ten Man Killer. Medeiros left the band some time after, and Baudin asked Pat Garner to step in. They recorded two demos,"2:001" and ''U:pside Down'', before the band called it quits in 2002.

Nuclear Rabbit reunited in 2002 with its original line-up and recorded their 2nd full length, ''Mutopia'', the title being a portmanteau of the words mutation and utopia. The album was well received, but the band went through more line-up changes following the supporting tour. A few shows were played in the Northern California area in 2008 with new guitarist Macy Mullen, as well as new drummer Timothy Bailey, though the band is now currently on an unofficial hiatus, with a status of "Writing New Tunes!" on their official MySpace page for 3 years with no updates. In August, 2011, the band announced their first show in three years via JeanBaudin.com, and played an hour-long set on October 8th, 2011, at 924 Gilman in Berkeley, CA.

Tomas Haake (born 13 July 1971) is a Swedish drummer of the experimental metal band, Meshuggah.

Musical career

Haake is noted for his technical abilities; his drumming style is characterized by heavy use of polyrhythms while often maintaining a steady 4/4 beat. This signature style has become one of the most recognized features in the music of Meshuggah. It was developed after a coversation with "Swish" about 1/1 time. He is also known for stacking his cymbals in a variety of configurations to give himself a desired sound.

Haake also writes the majority of Meshuggah lyrics and also contributes spoken vocals on several songs ("Choirs of Devastation" on the album ''Contradictions Collapse'', "Inside What's Within Behind" and "Sublevels" on the album ''Destroy Erase Improve'', "The Exquisite Machinery of Torture" on the album ''Chaosphere'', "Spasm" on the album ''Nothing'', as well as on several chapters on the album ''Catch Thirtythree'' and on the song "Dancers to a Discordant System" from ''ObZen'').

The drumset Tomas Haake uses has been meticulously sampled in full for the software instrument Drumkit From Hell Superior made by Toontrack, with Haake performing all the drumming himself. It since has been used by many bands, including fellow metal act Clawfinger, Devin Townsend's ''Ziltoid the Omniscient'', Dethklok on Adult Swim's TV show ''Metalocalypse'' (in several songs from the second season), and Ben Weinman of The Dillinger Escape Plan. The latter used it to program drum parts for the album ''Ire Works'' before The Dillinger Escape Plan found drummer Gil Sharone. Meshuggah later went on to use this software instrument to program all the drum tracks for their album ''Catch ThirtyThree'', and the re-release of their album ''Nothing'', using no live recorded drums by Haake. obZen also used the software as an auxiliary sound source as Haake played.

In the July edition of ''Modern Drummer'' magazine, Haake was named the number one drummer in the "Metal" category, as decided upon in the magazine's 2008 Readers' Poll.

Haake also provides spoken vocals on Meshuggah guitarist Fredrik Thordendal's solo album ''Sol Niger Within'' and vocals on the song "Futile Bread Machine (Campfire Version)" from ''The True Human Design''.

In 2012, Haake was named the 5th best Modern Metal drummer by MetalSucks.net

Personal life

Haake married Ida Evileye (real name Ida Stenbacka), the bassist of the Swedish all-girl rock band Crucified Barbara on 16 January 2011 in Las Vegas, Nevada. They were wed by an Elvis impersonator.

Jens Kidman (born 8 June 1966 in Finland) is a Finnish vocalist and former guitarist for the Swedish experimental metal band Meshuggah. He is famous for his very aggressive shouts and screams and for his "mean" stage presence. He was born in Finland, to a Danish father and Finnish mother, but they moved to Umeå as Jens was 11.

Musical career and style

When Kidman and bandmate/lead guitarist Fredrik Thordendal first created Meshuggah, he originally handled both vocal and rhythm guitar duties. He later abandoned his role as a rhythm guitarist, although he contributed guitar, bass, and drum programming on Meshuggah's 2005 studio album ''Catch Thirtythree''.

His vocal style consist of growls, hardcore shouts and aggressive screams. Kidman's vocal style has distinctly evolved over Meshuggah's career: earlier Meshuggah albums like ''Destroy Erase Improve'' and ''Chaosphere'' showcase Kidman's aggressive shouts and growls. In later albums such as ''Nothing'' and ''Catch Thirtythree'', Kidman's vocals were more of a monotone, almost robotic quality.

Kidman works with the rest of the band to make sure that his vocals take on a near-rhythmic quality when set to the music, sometimes even re-writing lyrics entirely for this purpose. The only time he is heard singing clean vocals on a Meshuggah recording is on the song "Ritual" from the EP ''None''. He occasionally double tracks his vocals as well. He sometimes writes lyrics for Meshuggah, for example on the tracks "Terminal Illusions" and "Suffer in Truth" from ''Destroy Erase Improve''.

He contributed vocals on the track "The Dream Is Over" from the album ''XIII'' by American alternative metal/industrial metal band Mushroomhead.
